Obituary of Alice Howard Scalzo

Alice Howard Scalzo, 80, of Vernon Center, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, August 13, 2010. She was born in Binghamton on March 11, 1930, the daughter of the late Duane and Jenny Black Howard. Alice graduated from Binghamton High School and received her RN from Utica Psychiatric School of Nursing and her BS in Nursing from Empire State College. On August 25, 1951 she was married to John D. Scalzo. The couple lived in Clinton for many years and together they operated the Wayside Market in Franklin Springs and Parkside Market in Vernon Center. Mr. Scalzo died September 10, 1983. Alice also worked as Supervising RN at Utica Psychiatric Center and Nursing Administrator at Marcy Psychiatric Center. After her retirement she volunteered for COCVAC and worked at Lutheran Care and Visiting Nurses Association. For many years she lived half her year in St. James City, FL near one of her children and attended church there regularly. She was an avid card player who played Bridge three times a week and Mahjong twice a week with her friends. She was a member of Ava Dorfman Center in Rome, TOPS and was secretary of Pine Island Civic Center in St. James City, FL. She had been a member of a bowling league for over 50 years. She is survived by her children, Dava and Jim Jacob of Vernon Center, Terry and Dave Wilbur of St. James City, FL, Duane Joseph and Renee Scalzo of Vernon Center, Lynn Scalzo Zombek of Oriskany Falls and her fiance Colin Colclough; and John Jr and Mary Beth Scalzo of Clinton; nine grandchildren, Derek and Krista Scalzo, Regina and Victoria Muth, Elizabeth Zombek, Robert Cook, Alicen and Kit Wilbur, and Isabella Scalzo and many other foster grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Logan and James Scalzo and Sophia Muth; many special friends and her companion Taco. She was also predeceased by her three siblings. Funeral services will be held at 9:30am Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc, 35 College St, Clinton and 10am at St. Mary's Church, Marvin St, Clinton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends are invited to call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the funeral home.
