Obituary of William A. Murphy

William A. Murphy, 56, formerly of Clinton, died suddenly at home on February 3, 2017 in Dumfries, VA. Affectionately known as “Murph”, “Billy”, “Bill” or “Wilbur” by his family and friends, Bill was born September 26, 1960 in Utica, the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Roberts) Murphy. He graduated from Clinton Central School with the Class of 1978 where he played hockey. He graduated from MVCC in 1980 and earned his Bachelors of Science and Accounting from RIT and played with the varsity hockey team. Bill joined the Department of Defense in 1997 and was promoted to Chief Financial Officer of the Stars and Stripes newspaper in 2012. He was an active member of his community, devoting himself to community service, volunteering and his catholic faith. He served on the Dumfries Zoning Board of Appeals for five years before being appointed to the Town Council two years ago. He was a member and usher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Triangle, VA. Bill was an avid fan of ice hockey, the Washington Redskins and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved to grill and cook big meals during the holidays. Bill looked forward to his visits to his hometown of Clinton, NY to spend time with family and friends. He is survived by numerous cousins; his longtime girlfriend Mylien Nguyen of Annandale, VA; and his dog Lexi. He was predeceased by his parents and his canine companion Molly. All are invited to call Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 1-3pm at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc., 35 College St., Clinton, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton at 9:30am on Monday. His burial will be in the spring in Deansboro Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Triangle, VA at 3pm on February 24, 2017 with a reception to follow at 4:30 at the Triangle Rescue Squad Bingo Facility, 3800 Graham Park Rd, Dumfries, VA.
