Dr Nicholas J. Nehrbauer Jr, MD
1946-2024
Dr. Nicholas J. Nehrbauer Jr, MD, age 77, passed away on June 10, 2024, in Clinton, NY. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou Nehrbauer, daughter Kathryn Nehrbauer, son Nicholas (Kristen) Nehrbauer, daugher Elizabeth Nehrbauer, sister Nancy (Henry) Langehennig, brother Richard (Carolyn) Nehrbauer, brother Joseph (Joan) Nehrbauer, grandchildren Emily and Olivia Nehrbauer, as well as a loving extended family.
Born on July 24th, 1946, in Yonkers, NY to parents Nicholas and Sara Nehrbauer, he spent his childhood in Hastings-on-Hudson, attended Archbishop Stepinac High School and went on to study medicine, first completing his undergraduate degree at Manhattan College, followed by Medical School at SUNY Downstate Medical College, and residency at Albany Medical Center.
Dr Nick, as he was called, held several positions at Albany Medical Center during the 1970’s and 1980’s including Medical Director of the Emergency Department and Director of Ambulatory Services. He also held academic positions including Head of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Albany Medical College. During this time, he served as chairman of the Medevac helicopter transport program with the NY State Police, and Regional Medical Director for the Hudson Valley EMS. His proposal resulted in the designation of Albany Medical Center as NY state’s first Regional Trauma Center in 1982. Later in his career, he became Director of Emergency Services at Westchester County Medical Center and went on to work with many more hospitals in NY state before ending his career after 50+ years with Bassett Healthcare, retiring in 2021.
Dr Nick loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Adirondacks. He fondly remembered his family trips to Maine and outdoor adventures in Montana with his close friends Ray, Wayne and Ricky Cure. He had a knack for writing stories, rummaging through yard sales and building model train sets. He looked forward to family reunions when he could oil his baseball glove to play catch with his brothers, swap endless stories about the old days, and hand out small gifts to all the kids. Most of all, Dr Nick was known for helping people. He was the first person we called with any news, good or bad, as he always knew what to do and how to put our minds at ease. He instilled values of hard work and determination in his children and was admired by many who knew him. He was someone you could depend on, whether it was for pet sitting, a long car ride, or a last-minute prescription at the pharmacy. He helped countless people, touched many lives, and will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be held at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers in Clinton, NY on Friday, June 21st from 12-2pm. A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:30pm Friday at St. Mary's Church in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nicholas’ name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
