I'm Paul's cousin. His mother, Mary Jane, and my mother, Cornelia, were sisters. Paul and I are the same age. I was born in March and Paul in April 1947. Our elementary years were in the 1950s and our high school years were in the early 1960s. My dad was from Mohawk and after my mom and dad married, we lived on Long Island. Every Summer, my dad would take his 2 week vacation and we'd go up to West Winfield and slpit some of the time with relatives in Mohawk. So Usually I got to spend about a week each Summer in West Winfield with Paul. I really looked forward to that week. We had so much fun. Paul and his brother Dan and I and my brothers would plan hide and seek at night running all over the back yards of the houses along main street. Paul & Dan had a go-cart at one point and that was a lot of fun riding up and down the sidewalk. We could go across the street to the Rexall Drug store to get ice cream. During the day we'd ride bikes all over the place. We'd also go to the town park and they would have various summer activities there for kids. Our mom's cousin, Marilyn Smith, was the leader/counselor for the kids activities. As we got old enough for little league, the West Winfield team would practice at the park and they would let me practice with them. On Long Island where I lived, there were so many kids that they were divided up into several teams and played on the same set of fields. I thought it was the coolest thing that the West Winfield team got to travel to other towns in the area to play ball. It seemed to me like the big leagues where teams travel from city to city. As we got older, I remember Paul and I going over to the high school with bat, ball and gloves and we'd hit fly balls to each other. Some years the West Winfield kids would be bused to Cedar Lake in the morning for a day of swimming at the lake and I'd be invited to go along. I remember going to Marilyn Smith's wedding at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown and Paul and I had the grandest time running around all over the place. I remember when his parents were building their new house up by the high school and one day Paul, his dad and I went to some nearby creek bed and gathered stones that Uncle Bob wanted to use around the foundation of the new house. Our parents generation would occasionally have a Senif family reunion in the 70's and 80's. Probably the last time I saw Paul was at one of those gatherings maybe in the mid 80's. We've been out of touch since them. But I still have wonderful memories of the time when for 1 week each summer, he was like a brother to me. RIP Paul and thanks for the memories!
