Obituary of Frank Edwin Price
Please share a memory of Frank to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frank E. Price, 76, passed away 25 May 2022 after a long battle with cancer and a brief stay in Hospice. Frank was born in Annapolis, MD to Jane and Frank H. Price. He graduated Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., earned a B.A. at Hamilton College and a Ph.D. in environmental biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was a biology professor at Oberlin College, Kirkland College, Hamilton College and Utica College, a Director of Academic Computing at Hamilton College and a co-founder of and contributor to BioQuest Curriculum Consortium.
Frank loved Nature and being outdoors. He walked Rocky Mountain streams wearing hip waders and rock climbing gear to study the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus unicolor) for research in Colorado then later enjoyed seeing other species of dippers in Scotland and Japan. Frank summited most of the Colorado Fourteeners, many of the Adirondack 46 in winter and summer, and the highest ground of most states and hundreds of counties around the USA. Visits to National Parks included hikes beyond viewpoints. In his later years hiking to fire lookout tower sites and waterfalls were as enjoyable as higher summits. Frank repeated hikes to many Colorado and Adirondack summits with his children, and walked village sidewalks and local country roads regularly until very recently.
Frank was always learning and sharing information. He traveled in North and South America, Europe and Asia. History sites were included in travel itineraries. He practiced yoga regularly. He enjoyed reading and discussing science fiction as well as Jane Austen novels, discussions at the Alexander Hamilton Institute in Clinton, NY, and writing occasional letters to a newspaper editor during his later years. Frank left written works and handiworks in this life, but his best creations are the son and daughter who continue in their versions of his shared values.
Frank is survived by his life partner of more than 50 years, Sue Ann Miller, son, Scott Price (Brooklyn, NY), daughter, Alta Price and her partner, Jonah Koppel (Chicago, IL) and sister, Mary Price (Tucson, AZ).
Frank declined a memorial service, but friends can consider memorial contributions to Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (netrf.org), The Nature Conservancy, or a charity of their choice. Frank’s cremains will be scattered in a place of meaning to family, and a granite marker will be in the Hamilton College Cemetery, Clinton, NY.
The family is grateful for care and compassion of staff at Mohawk Valley Health System, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Upstate Cancer Center and University Hospital, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Siegenthaler Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
