Maryellen Spellicy
1933-2021
Maryellen joined her sweet husband Andy, who she loved dearly, in their “new home” on August 4, 2021. Born in Candor, NY on February 13, 1933, daughter of William and Ella (Chase) Juckett. The family moved to Utica in 1943. In 1978 she married Andrew Spellicy who predeceased her in 2019.
During the ‘60’s and 70’s Maryellen was active with the Rome State School, and the Oneida County ARC and the NYSARC. She was employed by Seneca Inn, Bergamo East Conference Center, Trinkaus Manor, Riverside School of Aeronautics and South Utica Dental Group, retiring in 1999. Maryellen loved music and the arts. Her favorite musical was “The Sound of Music”. Maryellen was always concerned with her appearance and she said “As long as your lipstick is on, you’re ready for anything”.
Maryellen was a truly special person. She was the kind of person that listened intently to what people were saying, making a mental note of how she could be of help in any way. Her spirit was of love and acceptance. She pushed against all odds in times of hardship and was a true friend, someone you could count on. Many people say they will do things, but Maryellen was a doer. She never forgot to write a thank you note or give encouragement. Friends have described her as selfless, devoted and strong. Maryellen was so giving and opened her home and heart to all. She was always baking and cooking for those she loved. Her positive outlook on life will be greatly missed.
She is survived by son Gary Burkle of Utica; daughter Kristin Burkle and grandson Marcus of Clinton; Spellicy stepsons, Michael (Mary Rose) of Rome, Sean (Iris) and Timothy (Paz) of Hawaii; Spellicy stepdaughters, Patricia O’Hara of Clark Mills, and Kathleen (James) French of FL; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; Juckett brothers, Tinker of Rome, and William (Janice) of London; sisters, Jane Schuderer of Marcy, and Ella Blades of FL. Close to her heart is Marcella her “near sister”; Card Club friends Andrea, Kathy, Eileen; and dear friend Sandy; several nieces, nephews and many good friends. She was predeceased by her son Douglas Burkle in 2010, her sister Dorothy Bentley of IN (2020) and many family members and friends.
