I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Sam's sudden, untimely death. I knew Sam many years ago when I was at Cornell, and had followed and admired his work as a composer in the years since. He made a huge contribution to the musical life of the area, and will be sorely missed. Please know that the entire musical community of Central New York holds you in their thoughts and hearts in this terrible, unimaginable time.

Sam was a treasure. We were lucky to have known him. Although it's been nearly twenty years since we studied in his classes, we still speak of him often and with great fondness. We remember his passion for his work, his kindness, and his wonderful sense of humour. He will be deeply missed, but he lives on in our hearts.
Much love,

Dear Colleen ,
I am so devastated to learn of the horrible accident that took Sam from us .I am so sorry for your loss and extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Pellman family .Sam was a truly wonderful human being ,one of the finest I have ever met , and I am truly enriched by his friendship ,wisdom and kindness .I loved his quirky ,goofy humor and his dedication to his family , Hamilton College , the democratic club and the Methodist church . I am so personally proud of him for being banned from Claudia Tenney's Facebook page and so indebted to him for his passion in countering the current administration - he is an example for all of us to follow .I don't know if you knew but we were hatching an exhibition to include "American Carnage " and I hope to be able to continue with this work - it's imperative that this piece be exhibited and played .
All of us in the KTSA building owe a tremendous debt to Sam .I pushed the heck out of him in order to develop the best spaces I could for the college and Sam supported the extra work it made for him and the architects . You and he both sacrificed so much in getting that building built and I will make sure that future generations of students know the contributions he made .When the building was done Sam could have rested on his laurels but instead he went to work in Buttrick under the horrible last gasps of Reynolds to assist in rebuilding the trust of faculty in the DOF . He certainly did God's work in that mission !
We all loved him so much and I will forever think of sheep and ice cream when I remember him . He is a paragon and example of how kindness can conquer cruelty and I will try my best to remember that lesson too .
Please know how many lives Sam touched and how beloved he was .

I will always remember Sam's kindness and compassion towards me. He always had a twinkle in his eye and an upbeat attitude. But at the same time he had absolutely no patience with injustice of any sort. Through his persistence, he created a culture of diversifying the faculty at Hamilton College and he backed it up by welcoming faculty of color as they embarked on their careers at Hamilton. I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathy to all of his family.

To the Pellman family, my sincerest condolences upon the death of beloved husband and father Sam. May you be comforted during this unimaginably difficult time. I am with you all in spirit.
Prayer for the Dead by Marianne Williamson
Dear God,
Please take the soul and spirit of this dear departed one into the sweetest corner of Your mind, the most tender place in Your heart, that he and I might be comforted.
For now he has gone, and I pray, dear God, for the strength to remember that he has not gone far.
For he is with You and shall remain so forever.
He remains within me, for we are all in You together.
The cord that binds us one to the other cannot be cut, surely not by death.
For You, dear God, have brought us together, and we remain in eternal connection.
There is no power greater than You.
Death is not your master, nor mine.
These things I believe and ask my heart to register.
I surrender to you my grief.
I surrender to you my pain.
Please take care of Your servant, my dear one who has passed.
And please, dear Lord, take care of me.
Amen.
