Our lives intertwined from the time you were 17 and I was 16. There was this connection between us but time was not our friend. When I was on you were off and visa versa. We talked about a future that was never to come. You were always there, tucked safely in my heart, even till the end. I still can’t hear “My Prayer” without crying. Thank you for finding me again and letting me know that a connection was still there. It meant more than you will ever know. Then you were gone…….

My sincere condolences to the family on Tom's passing. Just a great guy who was a tremendous asset to our crisis management profession. A true pioneer and mentor in the education arena, I see his face every semester when I show my students the BCP video tapes with Tom leading the exercise. He will be greatly missed.

I only knew Tom personally for a few years, having the honor of meeting him and sharing lunch with him a few times at the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, MD. But I had been reading his articles on risk and crisis communication for several years prior. But more than his professional credentials, I was touched by his kindness and willingness to share his thoughts, ideas and time. I was hoping to be able to get him to present to emergency managers and/or public information officers in Maryland in the future. Please know in these trying times for his family and friends that Dr. Tom touched more lives than you can ever know. His legacy in emergency communications will live on for generations.

My sincere heartfelt condolences to Ms. Catherine and Andrew. Tom was instrumental in my becoming a professor, something that I had pursued for months. I first met Tom while attending emergency management courses in Emmitsburg, MD. It was not long that a true friendship developed and strengthened over a few adult beverages. I will recall the knowledge that he shared in the classroom. Yet, it was the conversations that occurred outside of the classroom that were just as instrumental. He always challenged my critical thinking abilities.
Getting to know Tom, I was pleasantly impressed with his voice. I was amazed at his vocal cord talent. As a ponder his unfortunate untimely passing, I was reminded of some lyrics that I found fitting for him. The first is from a song recorded by Doby Grey - Drift Away:
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in the song
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You helped me along
You're makin' me strong
The second song recorded by Vince Gill - Go Rest High on that Mountain:
Oh,how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve.
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing.
Go rest high on that mountain
Son,your work on earth is done.
Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.
Ms. Catherine and Andrew, please know that Tom was a blessing in my life and I am forever in his debt for all he has done. I am truly blessed that our paths crossed, as many are. His dedication to the education profession and the emergency management profession undoubtly made our society a better one and made first responders better.
I am deeply saddened and sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing him with us. I will pray for you and know that you are in my thoughts on this day.
Thank you,
Lee

Words don't suffice for losses like this. All though, Tommy and I saw each other infrequently since high school, every time that we did, it was as if time stood still. We met in junior high school. We played in school bands together and connected immediately. While in high school, we had a band called The Starlites, Tommy pretty much set the pace and aspirations of that band. His musicality was extraordinary. We started working real "gigs" when we were only 15 years old. The bonds created in a first band like that are impossible to describe.
To Catherine, Andrew & kids, Robert, Carol Sue & Shelby, I offer my sincere condolences. I'm sure you know how much I loved and respected him. I will never forget him.
