John L. Cornelius, 80, of Deansboro, passed away with his family at his side, in Florida on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014.
He was born April 2, 1934, in Oneida, NY, son of Frank and Clara Lloyd Cornelius. On August 3, 1957, he was united in marriage with Genevieve Welch. John was a US Air Force veteran, and a retiree from the US Army Reserves. After the Air Force he joined his parents in their farm equipment business. He also served various positions in the Town of Marshall and Oneida County. John joined the Deansboro Fire Department in 1956, and held various offices before becoming an honorary member. He was very active in and served as Commander of the Shilling, Burns and Young VFW Post #9591; member of the Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post #232, and a lifelong member of the Deansboro United Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife; his, son, Doug (Sue) Cornelius of Deansboro; daughters, Sue Sigsbee, Waterville, NY; Cindy (Bill) Woods, Kennesaw, GA; and Patti Cornelius (Lynn Becker) of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren Ryan Cornelius, Cortnee St. John, Kristen Hartman, Jason Sigsbee, Jarid Sigsbee, Devin and Marissa Cornelius, Sarah Paige and Jake Camp; great grandchildren Trevor and Trent Cornelius, Cassie Sigsbee, Liam and Ethan St. John and Owen Paige; sister Barbara (Fred) Schuck and brother Paul (Joyce). John was predeceased by his grandson, Cpl. John P. Sigsbee, KIA, Iraq, 2008.
Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Sunday afternoon, April 27th from 2-4pm at the Deansboro United Church of Christ. Funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours. A celebration of John's life will be held in the church house. John will be laid to rest in the Saratoga National Cemetery, beside his grandson John, on Monday.
