Margaret Brant (Mickey) Adams
Clinton, NY
Mickey Adams, 83, died Monday afternoon February 15th at the Lutheran Home in Clinton eleven years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Those who knew her before her illness know what a rare person she was.
Born Margaret Muir Brant in Columbus, Ohio, February 7, 1927, she was the daughter of Arthur Marshall Brant, an emeritus professor of mineralogy at The Ohio State University, and Margaret Beatty Brant. She graduated from North High School in Columbus in 1944 and the University of Rochester in 1948-the third woman to graduate from the School of Optics.
On June 27th, 1948, she married Gilbert Adams in Columbus, a blessed union of 61 years. She worked for Colson & Brice Court Reporters in Albany 1948-51. From 1951-1967 in Livingston, NJ, she concentrated on raising her four children: Kit, Tom, Peg, & Lyn. After graduate work at Hamilton College and SUNY Oneonta, she taught math at the Clinton Middle School 1970-90. She was founder and advisor of the Kiwanis-sponsored Builders Club 1980-93.
Mickey loved music and sang in church choirs for over 50 years. She sang in the Hamilton College Oratorio for many years. She played piano and organ and was a string bass player with the Livingston Community Orchestra for 11 years and the Utica Symphony for 12 years.
While a member of the Presbyterian Church of Livingston, she served as president of a presbytery-level women's association. At Stone Presbyterian Church in Clinton, she served as a ruling elder and represented the Utica Presbytery at the Synod of the Northeast meetings. She was president of the Clinton Teachers Association in 1982.
In 1965, she was named the Woman of the Year in Livingston by the Sisterhood of the Temple Beth Shalom for her efforts in bringing the Fresh Air Fund to Livingston. In 2003, Mickey and her husband received a lifetime achievement award from the Clinton A Better Chance Program for being the first resident directors, 1972-76, and later Board Chairpersons. In 1983, they were named Man and Woman of the Year, in Clinton, by the Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post 232 for the same reasons.
In 1999, Mickey was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She is remembered fondly by her family and those who knew her for her smile, her laughter, her optimism, her love of music, and the fact that she was a truly beautiful woman in every sense of those words. The family thanks our great neighbors at Homewood Drive for their vigilance. The family also thanks the staff of the Lutheran Home for their outstanding care these last four plus years.
She is survived by her husband, Gil; her daughter, Kit Miller (Steve) in Deansboro, NY; her son, Tom in Clinton; her daughter Peg Landgraf (Bill) in DeForest, WI; and daughter Lyn Domenick (Mick) in Wheat Ridge, CO.
She leaves 11 grandchildren: Marika Krull (Eric), Naomi Roof (Josh), and Tomi Pogact (Mark) all in Vermont; Otto Allanson of Clinton; Jacob, Lauren, and Zachary Adams of Bowling Green, KY with their mother, Deborah A. Logan; Megan and Steve Landgraf of Deforest, WI; and Tony and Gus Domenick of Wheat Ridge, CO; three great-granddaughters, Ada and Piper Krull, and Harper Roof.
She leaves a brother, David Brant (Dottie) of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Marian Davenport of Alexandria, VA. She was pre-deceased by her oldest brother and his wife, John and Betty Brant of Bay Village, Ohio. She had special relationships with her nieces and nephews Lynda Schuller, Kathy Whipple (Dan), Jonathan Brant (Mindy), and Steve Brant (Becky). She also had a fondness for the Davenports: Jenny Mitchell (Vince) and Billy Davenport.
Mickey had great friends; none greater than Trudy Christler, Florence Morgan, and Frannie Evans.
