Obituary of Irene M Scranton

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irene M. Scranton, 79, a longtime resident of Clark Mills, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Oneida Extended Care Facility. For 16 months while living there, Irene was lovingly cared for by the compassionate and attentive staff, and our family is very grateful for each of them. Over that time they became like family to Irene and her children. She was born in Utica on April 30, 1934, a daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Thrasher Smith. She graduated from New Hartford High School and had worked at K-Mart retiring from there after many years, also, Nichols, Utica National and the NY Telephone Co. On November 28, 1953, she was united in marriage to Albert “Bud” Scranton, a blessed union of nearly 60 years, until his passing February 9, 2013. She was a loving and caring wife, never wavering from her devotion to him. Irene was a very active member of Church of the Annunciation for many years and its Altar Rosary Society. She loved God and lifted her prayers to Him. Irene was a founding member and generous contributor to the Country Pantry, where she volunteered many hours of service to the local community. She volunteered for church Bingo games, assisted with religious ed. classes, and supported the musical group Exodus. Her favorite activity was baking and she donated hundreds of freshly made confections for the church bake sales. She was also a den mother, member of the PTA and supported the local community in various ways. Her love of chocolate and baking delicious homemade pies, cookies, candy, and cream puffs kept her family and friends coming back for more, with the aromas filling her kitchen. Throughout Irene’s life her most cherished roles were that of Wife, Mother, and Grandmother. She was a Matriarch who held her family together and infused every interaction with love, care and wit. Every flaw, every moment, every downfall was made stronger through Irene’s wisdom and love. There are no words which can adequately describe the impact Irene had on the lives of her family and we can only hope to be half as strong as she was. She is survived by her six devoted children and their spouses, Patricia and Robert Lauducci of Westmoreland; William and Laurie Scranton of Norwich; Margaret “Peggy” and Alan Blume of Sutton, MA; John and Diane Scranton of Mifflinville, PA; Carol and Steve Eaton of Westmoreland and David Scranton of Inlet; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Alexandra Lauducci, Joseph and Lisa Lauducci, Sarah Lauducci, Marianne Lauducci, John and Ashley Scranton, Katie and Gary McKinnon, Paul Scranton, Michael Scranton, Andrew Blume, Amy Blume, Carly Scranton, Emily Scranton, Christopher Eaton and Justin Eaton; three great-grandchildren, Annalisa Dam, Elizabeth Scranton and Ce Ce McKinnon; her dedicated sisters, brothers, and caring in-laws, Pat and Russ Hughes, Bill and Bonnie Tuttle, Edie Szatko, Larry Smith, Robert and Sharon Smith, Richard Smith, Barbara Smith, Skip Smith; a sister-in-law Elizabeth Becker; and many loving nieces and nephews. She also leaves several wonderful friends from her church community, who regularly sent cards and prayers her way. She was very grateful for the many cards, notes, and people who came to visit her faithfully. They really did brighten her days, as she did theirs. This wonderful woman will be missed and remembered with so much love. Good Night, Irene, Good Night. As Irene would say, “I love you, drive carefully.” All are invited to call Sunday from 2-4pm at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc, 35 College St., Clinton and to a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated at 10am Monday, February 10, 2014 at Church of the Annunciation, Clark Mills.
