Grace Alice Excell Houck, 95, a 63-year resident of Brimfield St., passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the Heritage Health Care Center.She was born October 14, 1913 on Post St. in Clinton, a daughter of Henry Charles "Charlie" and Alice Elliff Excell who came over from England. She graduated from Clinton High School with the class of 1932. On June 12, 1934, she was united in marriage to Lester A. Houck at St. James Episcopal Church in Clinton. Mr. Houck died November 1, 1985. Grace worked as a cashier at the Victory stores in Jeffersonville, New Hartford and Clinton for over 19 years. She and her husband ran "Houck's Ice Cream Stand" for a few years after the death of Lester's father, Ray. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and a former member of the St. James Guild. She was also a past member of the Augusta-Grace Chapter No 126 O.E.S.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Alfred Remington of Clinton; brother-in-law and his wife, Walter and Louise Whittaker; and Lester's cousins Robert and Aileen Higgins; and many special nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Mark Remington, in 1999; three brothers and their wives, Reginald & Eleanor Excell, Bertram & Beatrice "Bea" Excell, Frederick & Marjorie Excell; four sisters and their husbands, Gwendolyn "Winnie" & Charles "Chuck" Cate, Gladys "Glad" and John "Van" Van Marter, Edith "Bill" and Albert "Al" Bethlehem and Ethel Mack; a brother-in-law, Lynn Houck and two sisters-in-law, LaVonne "Bonnie" and Kenneth Shaw and LaVerne Houck.Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 2009 at 2PM at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc, 35 College St., Clinton. Friends are invited to call Monday from Noon until the time of the service. Augusta-Grace Chapter No 126 O.E.S. will conduct services at 12:30pm Monday. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.Thanks to everyone at the Heritage Health Care Center, especially the staff and friends on the 7th floor and Nurse Practitioner, Sandra Fish.
