Carol was a neighbor when I was growing up, we went to the same school. She has always been a wonderful friend; a very accomplished, intelligent exemplar in our community of Deansboro, and a valued member of our Congregational Church; truly one of humanity's finest.

I was privileged to know Carol during my time as alumni director at SUNY Morrisville. She was among my favorite mentors and taught me a lot about conducting business and dealing with difficult people.
Here's my favorite Carol Ford McLaren story:
During one of our annual visits to lobby the state legislature in Albany, Carol was part of a lobbying team along with another alum, a couple of students, and me and another staffer. I introduced each of them by name.
We were visiting the office of NYS Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, a Syracuse-area media legend who always took an aggressive approach to talking with media and constituents.
Carol began her scripted comments by saying, "What we want to share with you, Nancy, is--..."
The senator quickly interrupted in a condescending tone, "It's Nancy LARRAINE, Karen."
Not missing a beat, and in a perfectly measured, unaffected voice, Carol answered back, "It's CAROL, Nancy Larraine."
And then she returned to her lobbying message.
That was Carol. I loved her for it.
