I had Mr. Sequin for a one-semester SAT prep class my junior year of high school. I believe this was the spring semester of 1991. Although I only had him for half a year, he made a huge impact on me. I really liked him. He had high standards for his students and I appreciated that. He was fair, kind, and had a wicked sense of humor. Condolences to his family and friends. - Ari Anna Scott, class of 1992

I was so saddened to hear of Mr. Sequin's passing. He was such a pivotal educator in my life as a young man. I recall so many times he encouraged me to explore my passions in writing and literary analysis. I went on to receive degrees in dramatic arts and comparative literature, largely stemming from his paradigm for learning.
He was a true gem in Northport High School, and many times drove accountability in the classroom, always with a sharp wit and sense of humor attached.
I will always hold space in my heart for his great command of language and art.

Very few of my teachers stand out in my mind. Mr. Sequin was the exception. I learned so much from him - more than academia. I thought of him often over the past 50+ years and regret not tracking him down and letting him know what an impact he had on so many students who were lucky enough to have been placed in his class. He was one in a million. Condolences to his family and friends.

Wow, 81. To me he will always be that 28 yr, old, boyishly good looking man in his sweaters and khakis and penny loafers walking through the halls of Northport High on his way to class. I was fortunate to be in two of his classes. 10th grade English and 12th grade Film Study. I never looked at movies the same even after one class. But even more, he taught me so much about being an individual, to develop a style. He taught me to be responsible with my caustic wit or risk hurting people. He was always my teacher, but I also knew that he was my friend.
My condolences to Jim,. his constant companion for all these years. My friends Betty and Sue and I shared many laughs together, in his house overlooking Northport Harbor, sharing stories and talking about the things that made us happy. How wonderful to be a teacher, a good and caring teacher who will live on forever in the memories of his students.

Mr. Sequin was my favorite teacher of all time from Northport High School. He encouraged me to write and he also stepped in when I was going through a rough teenage patch with my family. He was a wonderful teacher. My condolences to his loved ones. I hope he knew how much of an impression he made on many of his students.

Q: What was William really good at?
A: Mr. Sequin was outstanding at inspiring students in writing. He made me the writer and poet I am today. He taught me I had a unique voice and made me proud of it. I will never forget him. He had very high standards and pushed us to excel. I spoke to him on the phone about 2 years ago and sent him some of my later work. I just so wish I could have met him face to face one time before he died, so I could have let him know how much he meant to me....
I do hope he forgave me for all of my fictions, shenanigans and class disruptions.

He was one of the most important influences on me— it’s hard even to find the words. He changed my life. I was his student in tenth grade, an utterly terrified kid who never spoke in class. One day he pulled me aside and said to me, “You’re going to have to start talking in class. Your face is distracting me.” He explained that my facial expressions revealed that I was having all kinds of thoughts and reactions to what others were saying, and I’d better just verbalize them instead of sitting there making distracting faces. That was just the beginning. He saw something in me and helped me see something in myself. I’m an English teacher at a college now too, as I saw another student of his share. He wanted me to be a writer, though, not an academic. I’ve been writing a work of fiction and it’s made me think of him every day. I imagined sharing it with him. I hope he would have liked it (but who knows? He had strong opinions and they were extremely rigorous!). I’m so sad you’re gone, Mr. Sequin. I’ll always remember you.

By far the most inspiring teacher I had in high school. While in his AP English class I decided to become an English teacher myself. I’m so grateful for having learned from him, and I model a lot of my own teaching on the rigorous humanism he first taught me.
