Obituary of Bernard L. McGinnis

Bernard L. McGinnis, 91, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013 at his home in Canandaigua with his family by his side.
He was born in Racquette Lake, NY on September 22, 1921 the son of the late Louis and Kathryn (Nusser) McGinnis. Bernie served in the Navy during WW II. On June 15, 1946 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, he married Helen R. Lenahan. The couple spent 55 years of their life together in Westmorland, before Helen's passing on June 20, 2001. For many years Bernie ran the Westmoreland IGA Store. He also worked for Rich Plan and was a school bus driver for the Westmoreland Central School District.
He was an avid community member and was the first President of the Westmoreland Historical Society, was awarded the Citizen of the Year award by the Grange, was a life time member of the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department, General Chairman of the Founder's Day Committee, President of the Bi-centennial Committee and served as Town Councilman for 30 years.
Bernie enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially baseball with the Atlanta Braves holding a special place in his heart. He played second base for the Westmoreland Athletic Club, and they were Tri-County Champs from 1946 - 1948.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Dennis Money of Canandaigua; four grandchildren, Erin (Paul) Berrigan, Kristie (Ryan) Spadafora, Travis (Kate) Money and Tucker Money; his three great grandchildren and the loves of his life Sylah Money and Liam and Ruby Berrigan; his brother Jim (Jan) McGinnis and several nieces and nephews.
All are invited to call on Monday, September 23, 2013 from 10am-12 noon at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc., 35 College Street, Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Annunciation, 25 South Street, Clark Mills at 1pm with internment immediately following at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton.
