Obituary of Louise A. Dewey
Louise A. Dewey, 94, Clinton, passed away May 30, 2024 at Waterville Residential Care in Waterville, NY.
Louise was born in Cortland, NY on November 28, 1929 to the late Howard and Ada (Slocum) Wood. She was united in marriage to Douglas F. Dewey on November 16, 1952 in the Congregational Church, in Homer, NY. They welcomed their daughter, Linell, the following year. Louise worked for many years at the Shine Theater, Crescent Corset Company, and the Cortland Memorial Hospital. Following the arrival of their granddaughters, Doug and Louise moved to Clinton, NY so they could be closer to Linell and served as doting caregivers to both Sarah and Amanda as they grew up.
During Linell's childhood, Louise was a Girl Scout Assistant Leader from Brownie level through Linell's senior year of high school. A skilled seamstress, Louise also made the dress for Linell's wedding to Jeff in 1980 and crafted handmade Halloween costumes for her grandaughters for many years.
She was known for her strict attention to detail, from perfectly wrapped presents to hospital corners on her bed. You could often find Louise on her feet, cleaning, cooking/baking, and making sure everyone was taken care of. Her family dinners and holiday spreads were always something to look forward to.
Family time was cherished by Louise and she enjoyed traveling to attend family reunions and to visit relatives. At Christmas, Louise enjoyed adorning her home with her huge Santa Claus collection and hanging her Old World glass ornaments on the tree. For her other hobbies, Louise enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, and traveling with Doug. She was also a member of the American Legion Aux of Cortland Post #0489.
She is survived by her loving family; her children, Linell and Jeff Machold; her grandchildren, Amanda Machold, Sarah (Machold) Matus and husband Jim Matus; great-grandson Andrew James “AJ” Matus; and sister, Ruth McLaughlin. She was predeceased by Douglas Dewey, her husband of 60+ years, sisters Florence Blanchard and Elizabeth Wiest, and brother Raymond Wood.
Although Louise is no longer with us, her spirit will live on through her loved ones. Please consider donations in Louise’s name to the charity of your choice.
