Garr William Welker Jr.
Garr William Welker Jr., peacefully passed away on Sept 19, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Garr was born April 19, 1950, in Preston, Idaho to Garr William and Dorothy (Forsgren). Garr, known in his youth as Billy, moved throughout the States and Guam with his family before moving to Rome, NY. Garr enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Seawolf and the first nuclear submarine the Seawolf from 1970 -1972 as a diesel and then nuclear mechanic. During his senior year of High School and when he returned to Rome after his deployment in the Navy, Garr worked at Revere Copper and Brass as a furnace mechanic. He then worked as a regional market sales manager for the U-Haul Corporation where he landed the contract for moving WOUR the Rock of Central New York radio station. He later joined and retired from the New York State Department of Corrections, opening the Oneida Correctional Facility. Garr was the first in our family to graduate from college, graduating from MVCC with a degree in accounting.
Garr liked to fish and was an avid Bowler as well as Golfer. He was a member of leagues for each as well as enjoying golfing trips to Myrtle Beach. He enjoyed teaching his sons how to play.
Garr was a priesthood holder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held several high positions as an Elder in the Church. Garr enjoyed being a Scout Master (with the Boy Scouts of America) for several years, through the church.
Garr married the love of his life, Paula Jean Wharram on March 8, 1975, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; having 5 children; and 9 grandchildren. Alan with Paris, Giana, Austin and Owen Welker; Brian (Lara) with Aleah, Lianna and Korbin Welker; Christopher (Kristi) with Lucas and Bradley Welker. He took great joy in his sons and grandchildren and their accomplishments. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Paula and their infant children Andrea Marie and Garr William the III. Besides his children and grandchildren Garr is survived by his brother Robert (Susan) Welker with niece and nephew, Rachel Sudweeks and Marcus Welker; and his Sister Cindy King.
He is predeceased by his Mother Dorothy (Forsgren) King and Father Garr Welker as well as brother Michael Gorden Welker.
Family and Friends are invited to call Wednesday, September 27th from 4-7pm at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, 35 College Street, Clinton, New York. Funeral service will be conducted the following morning (Thursday) at 10am, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 8439 Clark Mills Rd, Whitesboro, NY, with internment immediately following at Westmoreland Cemetery.
