Obituary of Barney M. Jachym, Jr.
Barney Jachym passed away at his home on South Street.
He was born in New Hartford to Barney Sr. and Helen Jachym. He was a graduate of New York Mills High School. Barney worked for the entirety of his professional career at Niagara Mohawk / National Grid, retiring after 40+ years as a Chief Line Mechanic.
Barney was incredibly proud of his work at Niagara Mohawk and considered many of his colleagues - the “NiMo Guys” - to be his best friends. He was an avid and talented golfer, and a ruthless trash talker on the course. Barney was a hot rod buff and delighted in challenging other drivers to drag race. He enjoyed traveling, including Caribbean cruises with his wife and family vacations in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. An ardent hunter in his younger years, Barney grew to support many environmental causes, including the reintroduction of wolves to native North American habitats.
Barney was predeceased in 2018 by his wife, Roberta. He leaves behind loving daughters, Robin Jachym Zito, Jennifer Jachym, and Amanda Jachym Schneebeck; son-in-law Casey Schneebeck; grandchildren, Garrett Zito, Gunnar Zito, Elliot Schneebeck, and Evelyn Schneebeck; and former wife Judith Rice, who has taken in Barney’s loyal feline companion, Junior.
The family invites all that knew and loved Barney to join them as they honor and celebrate his life on Sunday, August 6 at 12.00pm at Aqua Vino Restaurant, located at 8655 Clinton Street in New Hartford. Burial services are private and were arranged by Owens-Pavlot and Rogers Funeral Service, Inc. In Barney’s memory, please consider making a donation to Defenders of Wildlife or Spring Farm CARES Animal and Nature Sanctuary.
