One of my fondest childhood memories are those visits with Aunt Effie and Uncle Bob. Sadly, Aunt Effie May Paul-Spencer is the last of the Stephen & Elizabeth Moegling Paul immediate family... just one of many great American loving families who traversed the Great Depression without accepting charity.
In the written words of Aunt Effie’s beloved sister Margaret --- “They were a typical family of the early 1900’s. Considered poor, but with pride in the good sense of the Word. They worked hard to earn a living, grew their own garden vegetables, berries and fruit trees, harvested their crops together, canned the crops together, and stored them in a dirt floor basement for use in the cold winter months together. They made certain there was enough coal and wood in the cellar to carry them through the winter cold, and it was all paid for prior to being used. They never had to go to the bread lines for food -- now called welfare. Church attendance was a MUST, and the Bible was frequently read in their Burrstone Road home. Life was quite and peaceful…
We shall miss you very much Aunt Effie.
