Ernest Gosline, MD, 88, of Clinton, died on Monday, April 8, 2013, with his loving family at his side, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital. Ernest Gosline was born on May 12, 1924, in Dallas Texas, the son of the late Harold Inman and Anna Josephine(Manns) Gosline. He was a graduate of Utica Free Academy, class of 1941, and attended Cornell University Undergraduate and Cornell University Medical College, graduating in 1947with an MD degree. He was commissioned in the US Navy following graduation, and called into military duty during Korean Conflict as Neuropsychiatrist. He completed his residency in 1953, when he received his Board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology. Between 1953-1960, he completed a training analysis in psychoanalysis with Dr. Theodor Reik. In 1956, he was featured in an article in Life Magazine, for his participation in a pilot project involving groundbreaking research on the use of psychiatric treatments at Rockland State Hospital. Between 1959-1965, he served as Director and later Commissioner of Community Mental Health for Oneida County. Since that time, he has served as a psychiatric consultant for a number of organizations in Oneida, Lewis, Madison, and surrounding counties. He maintained a private practice in Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis through January 2012. He was an active volunteer in a variety of professional societies and organizations, and participated as Member and Chair of numerous Committees and Boards. He served as a Trustee of the Pan American Medical Association from 1990-1994, President of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 2001 to 2003, and as a Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. Over the years, he frequently authored papers and lectured on a variety of subjects in his field of expertise. Through much of his career, Ernest Gosline maintained an active involvement as a medical officer in the US Army Reserves. In 1979, he was promoted to Colonel, US Army Reserve, and served as Commander of the 331st General Hospital until 1986. He received numerous military honors and awards including Meritorious Service Awards from the US Army reserves and from the NYS National Guard. Ernie is survived by his wife, Violet, whom he married 65 years ago on January 11, 1948, in Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his 3 children, Scott (and Susan), of Lansdowne, Virginia, Peter (and Connie), of Peterborough, New Hampshire, and Susan (and John) Sector, of Sand Lake, NY; 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Ernie had a love of music, and was an avid musician. He played the violin in High School, College, and later on as part of the Utica Symphony Orchestra. He frequently performed at professional chamber music conferences in Upstate NY, Massachusetts, Vermont and Canada. Ernie was an active member of Westminister Presbyterian Church, Utica for many years in the Utica/Clinton area. It is the wish of the family that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in memory of Ernest Gosline, MD, to Westminister Presbyterian Church, 714 Washington Street, Utica, NY 13502, or alternatively, to the charity of their choice. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 13, 9am at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc., 35 College St., Clinton, NY. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday, April 12, from 4:30-7pm.
