Obituary of Frieda V Jabour

Frieda “Queenie” Jabour Frieda Jabour, a longtime resident of Clark Mills, died on March 15, 2021, in Dania Beach, FL, surrounded by family, friends and her dear companion of 65 years, Sally Hofmeister. She was 91. She was born in Clark Mills on July 24, 1929, to Teddy and Mary Acee Jabour. After a family friend commented that the newborn Frieda looked like a “queen,’’ she lovingly became known as “Queenie.” A 1947 graduate of Clinton Central High School, she entered Utica Memorial School of Nursing in Utica, graduating in 1950. She was awarded a post-graduate honorary internship by Skidmore College to study operating room management in New York City. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from SUNY, Oneonta. She worked as a surgical nurse at Memorial Hospital, which later became St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital. In 1962, she was recruited by what is now known as St. Elizabeth’s College of Nursing to teach operating room technique and retired from the faculty in 1985. Queenie, along with two other nurses, Marie Carzo and Sally Hofmeister, led an initiative for fair pay and benefits for nurses at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, which as a result became the first Catholic hospital in the state to sign a collective bargaining agreement with the New York State Nurses Association. A natural athlete, Queenie was an avid bowler and golfer into her late 80s. She was active in the Utica Women’s Bowling Association and was a member of the National 600 Club, Women’s International Bowling Association, and the Utica Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame. Like her late mother, she was a devoted Yankees fan. Queenie is survived by sisters Helen Fris of Clark Mills and Rose Mary Campbell of Rochester; brother-in-law Dalton Campbell; nieces and nephews Mary Fris, Regina Fris, William Fris (Anna) and Thomas Fris (Lisa), Christine Campbell Erne (David), Michael Campbell (Jennifer), and Mark Campbell (Andrea); many great nieces and nephews, and her second family, the Hofmeisters, Sally, Sallie, David, and Beth Allen. She was predeceased by her parents and brother-in-law Joseph Fris. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on August 6 at the Church of Annunciation in Clark Mills, where Queenie was a lifelong member. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
