David Hall Ames III, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the Lutheran Care Home in Clinton, NY where he had been under their care for 4 years.
He was born June 23, 1929 in Utica, NY, the eldest child of the late David H. Ames Jr and Aileen G. Spitzli. The Ames family lived on French Road in Utica until 1941 when they moved to Bristol Road in Clinton. Dave was a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 28 from 1942 to 1945. He graduated from the Clinton Central School District in 1947 with majors in mathematics and industrial arts. In 1956 he moved to 1 Hamilton Place with his mother and sister.
During his high school summers he worked for the Haxton Canning Co. in Waterville. After graduation he was employed by Kerk Guild Inc. for one year, the Continental Can Company Inc. for three years, The Smith Lee Paper Co. in Oneida, Utica Drop Forge and Tool Corporation for eleven years and General Cable Corporation for nine years. He retired from Midway Industrial Supply Inc. after twenty-two years of service. There he enjoyed relating to customers as the "go-to guy" with answers for any and all needs.
Starting in early childhood, he had an avid love for cars. Over his lifetime he owned 303 vehicles of all kinds, including three fire engines. In 1961 he bought a camp on Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks. It was here he spent as much time as he could. Dave generously shared the camp with family and friends who have spent many happy times there. He was a member of the Big Moose Property Owners Association.
He is survived by his brother Robert N. Ames (Keitha), Lexington, KY; his sisters Janet Hutchins (Warren), Huntington Beach, CA and Judith Tindall (G. William), Church Hill, TN and four nephews: Jeffrey Ames (Kathleen), Washington, PA, Douglas Ames, Owasso, OK, Jonathan Hutchins (Marilyn), Kansas City, MO, W. David Hutchins (Allison), Santa Ana, CA and four nieces: Deborah Thomas (Gregory), Edinboro, PA, Holly Ames, Houston, TX, Cynthia Priddy (Michael), Shelbyville, KY and Debra Combs (Thomas), Piedmont, SC. He is also survived by two great nephews, eight great nieces, one great-great nephew and three great-great nieces. He is also survived by a longtime companion, Gladys Jarosz. Dave will be missed by his family, by Gladys Jarosz and by his friends, especially Edward Jarosz and H.D. Andy Pope.
Funeral services will be at 1:30pm on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Chapel of Our Saviour at Lutheran Care, 110 Utica Road, Clinton, with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.
