Obituary of Robert L Ossont

Robert L. Ossont, 91, of Westmoreland, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. 

    He was born November 23, 1927 in Oriskany Falls, a son of the late Cecil and Norma (Thayer) Ossont.  Bob grew up in Prospect and Barneveld, graduating from Holland Patent Schools.  He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, ending his tour on the USS Missouri.  On April 23, 1949, he was united in marriage to Jean Cooper.  The couple shared 70 years of love and friendship.  Bob retired from Griffiss Air Force Base but didn’t sit idle during his retirement years.  He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge #347, where he received his 60-year award.  Bob was also a member of the American Legion Post #26, the Westlanders and the Westmoreland Fire Dept where he served as Chaplain.   

   Bob is survived by his beloved wife Jean; seven children and their spouses, Robert and Sherry of Mt. Morris, Charles and Kathy of Greenville, WI, Guy and Nancy of Lowell, David and Charlene of Carmichael, CA, Dennis of Norwich, CT, Joy and Steven Mientkiewicz of Rushford, and Steven and Laura of Westmoreland; daughters-in-law, Vicky Ossont of Big Moose and Ann Ossont of Norwich, CT; many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, William Slaven of FL; and many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by two sons, Thomas and Jeffrey; a daughter, Charlean; and his sister, Edna Slaven. 

    All are invited to call Saturday, October 19, 2019 from Noon to 2pm at our Rome location of Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Rd, Rome, NY.  Funeral  services will follow Saturday at 2pm at the funeral home.  Burial with military honors be in Westmoreland Cemetery.
