Obituary of Dorothy Carpenter

Dorothy Bryden Carpenter passed away on April 1, 2012 at her home in Oneida New York.
She was born on June 17, 1914 in Clinton, NY, the daughter of Sidney A. and Sara Bryden Carpenter. She attended Clinton Elementary School on Marvin Street and was graduated from Clinton High School in 1931. In 1934, she received a Life Certificate from Potsdam State Teachers College qualifying her to teach elementary grades.
Her first job was at the two-room school in Kirkland, NY, where she taught grades 4 - 6. After one year at Kirkland, she taught 4th grade for six years at Gilboa, NY, located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. She also taught at Riverhead, Long Island and Port Jervis, NY.
During World War II, she decided to take a sabbatical from teaching. Returning to her home in Clinton, she worked at the Rome Army Air Field, Rome, NY, as an office supervisor at the Civilian Medical Dispensary. At the end of the war, she worked in the Comptroller's office at Hamilton College where she was cashier and bookkeeper.
Returning to teaching in 1948, she taught in Oneida, NY at the North Broad Street School. She retired from teaching in 1973, after 25 years.
She was a Life Member of the Stone Presbyterian Church in Clinton, where she also belonged to the Service Club. After moving to Oneida in 1962, she and her mother, Sara, joined the Friends of the United Methodist Church. She was also a Life Member of the Grace Chapter #126, Order of the Eastern Star.
She leaves cousins, John M. Bryden, Falls Church, VA; Justine Kilborn, Chicago, IL; and Dolores Salisbury, New Hartford, NY. She felt blessed to have had so many wonderful friends, including neighbors.
There will be no calling hours. Burial on Thursday, April 5, 2012, will be held at Twelve Noon at the Bronson Vernon Center Cemetery on College Hill Road, Clinton, NY. Arrangements are through Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Services, Inc.
