Barbara (Babe) Cresswell was an amazing woman and her passing leaves a painful crack in so many hearts. At the same time part of me is mended, if that makes sense. Babe without Harry was never quite right. The world was slightly askew for these two people were a team. They were the kind of couple your eyes searched for as soon as you entered a crowed room. "Oh good, Babe and Harry are here," was a frequent comment between Bill and I. If Babe was there I always felt accepted, always welcomed no matter the situation.
I loved her from the beginning. She was just one of those people who drew you in, made you part of the conversation and whispered private comments that made you laugh when people got a little to full of themselves or stuffy. It was impossible not to love her.
I always felt she was a perfect foil for her slightly wild, and much loved husband. She did her best to keep him grounded and he let her soar. A match made in heaven, for sure.
So the beautiful whirlwind had gone to join her mate. I imagine she flew to his arms quickly, for Babe did everything on high idle, lol. I often wondered if she ever drank a cup of hot coffee for as soon as she poured it she was up doing something else. It seemed to me, an exhausted mother of five, that she had a boundless energy I wished I could capture.
I freely admit I was not a great niece. After Bill died I didn't go and see her. Somehow I couldn't imagine our combined sorrow being in the same room and either of us surviving it for I knew her pain as she knew mine. I'm not proud of myself, but I am grateful to have been loved by such a woman for they are rare indeed.
God speed, Aunt Babe. I pray you are all ready in Uncle Harry's loving arms.
