Obituary of Ada Marie McCurdy

Ada Marie Reynolds McCurdy, 92, of Prospect and Utica, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Masonic Care Community.
Marie was born February 4, 1919, in Dresden, NY, daughter of the late James Erwin and Mary Elizabeth Potter Reynolds. She graduated from Campbell Central School, Campbell, NY and Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester, NY, as a licensed dental hygienist. On September 3, 1939, she was united in marriage with Donald R. McCurdy in the Campbell Presbyterian Church. He passed away in December 1986.
Marie enjoyed a career as dental hygienist for Dr. E. Willard Bowdish and later as a dental hygiene teacher in the Holland Patent Central Schools and BOCES programs. She was an accomplished seamstress and created numerous beautiful hand sewn quilts.
Marie, for years, was very active in the Prospect Methodist Church holding various offices and leading numerous activities. She was Past Matron and Past District Deputy of Savona Chapter OES and Past Matron and dedicated member of Mappa Chapter OES in Barneveld. Marie volunteered extensively in the Coffee Shop at Faxton Hospital. Mrs. McCurdy co-owned the Prospect Glove Shop and continued operating it alone for many years after her husband's death. Marie lived in Prospect for over 50 years and for several years has resided with her daughters in Clinton and Whitesboro. She enjoyed her winters in New Smyrna Beach, Florida and her travels to the Cayman Islands. For the past three years she has resided at the Masonic Care Community on the Queens Household of the Metropolitan Neighborhood.
Survivors include daughters, Donna M. Kiggins and husband Joseph of Whitesboro and Nancy E. McCurdy of Clinton. She also leaves nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and wonderful caregivers.
The celebration of her life will be held at 3pm Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Tompkins Chapel at the Masonic Care Community, officiated by Rev. Robert Wollaber, Grand Chaplain of Masons, State of New York, who was her pastor and close friend. A reception will follow in the Winter Garden at the Masonic Care Community. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery in the spring.
