Obituary of Boyd Randell Effland
Boyd Randell Effland passed away with his family by his side on June 7, 2026, in Stuart, FL. He was the third and youngest child of Iva Loveless Effland and Boyd Rudolph Effland born in Rome, NY on December 1, 1942. He wed the former Joan Dorothy LaManque on July 21, 1962 who passed away in 1999, the mother of his six children. He later wed Carol Schmitt in 2001 who passed away this past December. Boyd was raised in Lowell, NY, a 1961 graduate of Westmoreland High School. He was a machinist for decades at the former Chicago Pneumatic on Broad St., Utica and moved with the company to Rockhill, SC in 1997. After his retirement he relocated to Florida where he resided for the remainder of his life. He was a former fire chief of the Westmoreland Fire Department and a member of the Elk's Lodge. Boyd was a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy and could do electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work. There wasn't an appliance beyond his repair or anything mechanical for that matter-cars, trucks, farm equipment, etc. He elevated cob jobbing to an art form.
The family home was burned to the ground in the mid-1970s and he built a new home by his own hand. Much time was spent with a growing family hunting, fishing, and camping. Later he and his sons became avid stock car racers with Boyd building the
engines while Joan attended the races cheering her team on.
He was fond of a good yarn and loved to tell stories of the old days over a cigarette and a cold can of Bud. Physical infirmities slowed Boyd down in his last few years but his mind was as sharp as ever right to the end. He will be greatly missed.
Boyd is survived by his sons Randy and Paulla Effland, OK, Timothy and Beth Effland, Westmoreland/FL, Scott and Michelle Effland, FL, Jeff Effland, Westmoreland, and his daughter SherriAnn and Gregory Young of Westmoreland. He leaves 24 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren with one on the way. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Petrie and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews of the Effland and LaManque families. Besides his two wives and parents, Boyd was predeceased by his infant son Steven Effland, and his grandson Timothy Effland, Jr. and infant granddaughter Courtney Effland. A graveside ceremony will be held at 1:30 pm on July 31st at St Mary's Cemetery in Clinton followed by a celebration of life at the Westmoreland Fire pavilion.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service.
