Obituary of Bernice A. Logan

Bernice A. Logan, 90, of Rome, NY,  passed away peacefully June 18, 2026, at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton, surrounded by her family. Bernice was born November 19, 1935, in Westmoreland, the ninth of ten children of Anthony and Antoinette Gregas Dzwonkas. In 1953, she graduated from Westmoreland Central School.  Her career path led her to Griffiss Air Force Base, where she worked as an administrative assistant.  At Griffiss, she met the love of her life, a young Air Force mechanic from Mississippi. She was married to Willis “Bud “ Logan on November 2, 1957, in the Church of the Annunciation, Clark Mills, just one day after he was discharged. They were married for more than 63 years, until his passing on April 29, 2021.

Bernice was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Rome.  She also volunteered for their clothing closet, Handsel, for many years. She was a caregiver at heart, making meals for neighbors in need and helping them with daily chores. She instilled her caring ways in her children, as well, teaching them to help others by shoveling driveways, mowing lawns or collecting money to send flowers to a neighbor who had lost a loved one. Bernice was the first to deliver a pie when a friend or family member suffered a loss.

Her love was all- encompassing, especially for her children and grandchildren. She celebrated their individual gifts and loved them fiercely. They all learned how to cook while standing beside her. Known far and wide for her cooking and baking, she could have filled several cookbooks with recipes she was famous for. She taught her kids to appreciate the simple things in life, like picking blueberries in the Sand Plains outside Rome till their fingers and faces were purple, or spending the day picnicking and swimming at Pixley Falls.  She loved going for rides to Old Forge to see the leaves in the fall and feed the deer, always letting her kids and grandkids stop at the Pied Piper and Candy Cottage for a treat. She loved nature, and could spot red berries in the woods while traveling down a road at 60mph, and always had boots and clippers in the car for such a find.

Bernice was a constant presence at her kids’ games, concerts and plays, celebrating their wins or healing their heartbreak, always their biggest fan. Her grandchildren brought her much joy, and she loved spending time with them more than anything else, playing Rummy, doing puzzles or having a special dinner together. Watching them grow filled her with love and pride.

Bernice had a spirit like no other. She was feisty, strong and savvy. She loved collecting antique furniture and dishes, and with her husband, would scour the countryside looking for old furnishings to restore and sell at her yearly garage sale. She adored the thrill of the hunt.

Bernice is survived by her four children,  Michael Logan of New York City, Richard Logan of Beaver Falls, PA, Cindy Logan and husband Robert Reifsnyder of Farmington, NY and Tamara and Robert Huyck of Westmoreland, NY; nine grandchildren, Adam Logan (Danielle), Alexa Colosimo (Ben), Paul Comenale, Austin, Katelyn, Nicholas and Sarah Reifsnyder,  Samuel and David Huyck, as well as 4 great- grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia, Dominic and Cabela.

She is also survived by a brother,  Pete Dzwonkas (Carolyn), many special nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, as well as brothers Walter Diamond, Anthony Dzwonkas and Bernard Dzwonkas, and sisters Albina Dzwonkas, Della Marcaitis, Antoinette Beauchemin, Jennie Larner and Agnes Cochis.

Bernice’s family would like to thank the many nurses, aides and staff at Katherine Luther Home for their loving, patient and compassionate care over the past several years.

Funeral Services will be held at Noon on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service in Clinton.

Friends may call from 10am until Noon at the funeral home. Burial will take place following the funeral service at St. George’s Cemetery, Whitesboro, New York.
