Obituary of Charles L. Thaler

Charles "Chuck" L. Thaler Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025. He was born on September 21, 1931, in Rome, New York, to Charles and Mildred (Kingsbury) Thaler.

Charles graduated from Oriskany Central School and built a strong work ethic throughout his life. He worked as a Tool and Die Maker at Utica Drop Forge and later spent 36 years at Kelsey Hayes, where he retired as Supervisor of Shipping and Manufacturing. After retirement, Charles continued working for 14 years with the National Bank of Vernon in the Maintenance Department.

He proudly served in the Army National Guard Reserve for four years.

On October 4, 1952, Charles married the love of his life, the former Lois Irene Howlett. Together they shared a beautiful life and raised three children: Garry Thaler of Westmoreland, Sandra Mudge of Fort Myers, Florida, and Leisa (Harold) Clawson.

Charles was a devoted grandfather to Trisa (Toby) Mena, Jessica Salerno, Baden (Ashley) Mudge, Lisa Mathy (Richard), Zachery Reed, and Jacob Reed. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Ellea, Ellana and Kalli Mena, Ashton Stoddard, Grayson Salerno, and Kinsley, Aria, and Lily Mudge. He is also survived by his brother, Barry (Andrea) Thaler.

Charles was predeceased by his loving wife, Lois; his beloved granddaughter Amanda Thaler; his sisters, Shirley and Dorsey; and his brothers, Richard, Donald, and Gerald.

Charles proudly served his community as Town Supervisor for 12 years and was active in many areas of the Town of Westmoreland. He volunteered for years as a coach and scout leader, and he was a dedicated member of Hecla Union Church.

Charles had many accomplishments throughout his life, but his greatest were the relationships he built with others. A true friend to everyone he met, he loved telling jokes and making people laugh. He was always the first to offer help to anyone in need. His kindness, generosity, and infectious spirit touched countless lives.

Charles deeply loved his family, and though he will be greatly missed, the light he shared with this world will never be extinguished.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to his many friends and to the compassionate staff at the Presbyterian Home for the care and kindness shown to Charles.

All are invited to calling hours for Charles on Wednesday, December 3rd from 4-7PM at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, 35 College Street, Clinton. Charles will be laid to rest in Westmoreland Union Cemetery with his wife Lois in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Charles name to the Lutheran Care Activities Department, care of Sue Peck. He always enjoyed the activities and good times he had during his stay at the Presbyterian Home.
