Obituary of John H. Shafer
John “Jocko” Shafer passed away on October 24, 2025. Born on March 25, 1938, he was the beloved son of Mable Brown Shafer and Herman John Shafer.
Jocko proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1966, working as an aircraft missile ground support electrical technician. His dedication, skill, and service were a point of pride throughout his life.
On August 7, 1965, Jocko married the love of his life, Kathleen Ann (McIncrow) Shafer. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and devotion to family.
In 1980, Jocko founded Shafer and Sons Storage Sheds, the first and only shed business within 100 miles at the time. With determination and craftsmanship, he built a company rooted in reputation, skill, and integrity—leaving behind a legacy of honest work and community trust.
Jocko was a man of many passions. He loved fishing, boating, golfing, camping, and driving his Mustang on a sunny day. One of his favorite stories to tell was when he reeled in a 650-pound Bluefin Tuna in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Above all, Jocko cherished time spent with his family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mable and Herman Shafer, his dear friend Marty (Patty) Joseph and his best furry friend, Bozo.
Jocko is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Shafer; his sons: John (Tammy), Joe (Robin), and Jason (Rachael); his grandchildren: Kayla (Andrew), Josie (Will), Jason (Taylor), Marlee (John), and Tessie (Cole); his brother-in-law Dick (Filissa) McIncrow; nephew and niece, Richard ( Debbie) and Courtney McIncrow; his best friend Jack (Pat) McCabe; and many lifelong friends who will forever remember his humor and stories.
The family would like to thank the staff of Rome Hospital, Nicole Archer, MeKenzie Pink and the wonderful Hospice caregivers for their care and compassion in Jocko’s time of need.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Arrangements are under the direction of Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service.
