I was 11 years old & my brother was 8 when Richard & Irene were married. Even though they were in NY Mills & my Father Harold & sons David & Douglas were in Florida our families always remained very close. Outside of their boys Billy & Bobby & all their grand children & great grandchildren Richard & Irene pastime of choice was NASCAR. Either Richard would call me or I would call him immediately after each Cup race to catch up & relive the days events. For years going back to 1959 Richard, Irene, & Richard’s mother Mary & father William would make the annual trip in February for the Daytona 500 & to visit Florida family. Eventually health issues for them all eliminated those annual trips but our phone calls continued until Richard’s passing. I always admired those two for their dedication to their wedding vows. Many times in a loving way I’d remind Richard of what a very lucky man he was to have found this beautiful Polish girl when they were in high school.
Irene was & still is an Angel. Standing by her man for a lifetime of creating beautiful family memories. No family member could Ever had any doubt about her love for each & every one of them. From Bill & Bob to every spouse & descendent from them, Irene was their Angel as well. She loved her family. They were everything to her. She loved her Florida family to as if it were from her own bloodline. When Douglas & I were young Irene would send a Christmas gift to us both of nice clothing from the stores she worked at. This Angel Irene was Always thinking of everyone else, many times to the detriment of her own health.
Angel Irene dedicated her entire life to that written contract that she & Richard signed together in 1960. As Richard’s health began to fail this Angel Irene sacrificed her own health to care for him to his end. As I often said in a very loving “Cousin” kind of way, Richard you could have searched the world over & would Never have found an Angel as dedicated to you as Irene.
Just days before her passing when everyone knew her time on this earth was fleeting as an Earth Angel, I called Bill who was at her bedside to pass on my love. Bill asked me to tell her myself. I knew she struggled to speak & I knew how emotional I might be but also knew this might be my last chance to tell this Earth Angel Irene how much I loved her. So at Bill’s request & encouragement I spoke my last words to Irene. I am thankful I did. Shortly thereafter she became GOD’s Heavenly Angel Irene & my guess is that she began again caring for her lifelong Earth partner. Richard, you are one lucky Dude. If we are to believe our Bible’s teachings those two will be together for all eternity. God bless you Irene. I love you.
