John Loy was one of my first professors. I was a freshman in college at Pratt Munson school of design in The fall of 1983. I felt so calm in his presence the atmosphere he created for us and the studio was peaceful. Because of John, I started listening to classical music regularly on national public radio, which led me to be a NPR addict in the long run. I still listen. He still life set up’s were amazing. The most exceptional was when he cut a garden full of sunflowers down and laid them throughout a large table between all of the students who circled them and had them draw with Fountain pens with ink and pans. I remember listening to the music and feeling totally engrossed. I enjoyed seeing John over decades at our events and at exhibits that I had to work in beside him at times. I’m proud to have had John as my professor. John will be greatly missed in this tight artist.
My condolences to Mary and the entire family. I hope to know when the celebration of life will take place.

My thoughts on Artist: John Loy, Emeritus Painting Faculty, Pratt Munson, Utica, NY.
Our Pratt Munson community is deeply saddened by the news of John Loy passing.
John was one of the core faculty who helped build our reputation as a unique BFA-Foundations Program, having joined the school in 1960 to teach Painting and Drawing until his retirement in 1991. John employed a keen sense of observation to invite the world into his radical compositions, a master of edge and spatial-play, his fragmentations sustained the tenacious viewer by leading them through an endless quest. John was a diligent and quiet spoken conversationalist, I learned valuable insights from his shared offerings.
Peace be with you John.
