George F. "Sonny" Barkett, 71, of Palm Bay, FL and formerly of Clinton, NY, died Friday, September 5, 2008 in Melbourne, FL. He was born May 22, 1937 in Utica, a son of George Jack and Susan Lewis Barkett. He graduated from UFA and received technical certificates from SUNY Tech and Utica College. Sonny served in the US Air Force from 1956-1959. He managed many local construction projects, before moving to Florida and working for American Land Lease. Sonny was an avid golfer, bowler and football fan, who also enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Scott Gengras of Owasso, OK and his son George GJ Barkett of Durhamville; his two sisters, one brother and their families, Barbara and George Spinella of New Hartford, John K. Barkett of Bonita Springs, FL and his wife Patricia M. Barkett of Clinton and MaryLou and Leon Wittig of Hudson, FL; many nieces and nephews, including George Spinella, Rick Spinella, Barbara Barkett Seamon, John Barkett Jr., Anthony Barkett, William Perry and Phillip Perry. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Richard C. Barkett. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 12, 2008 at 10:00am from Owens-Pavlot Funeral Service, Inc., 35 College St., Clinton and 11:00am from St. John the Evangelist Church, Oxford Rd, New Hartford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Friends are invited and may call Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Clinton. Please consider donations to American Cancer Society.
